"PHOTO # 1 SHOWS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE BASES.

At every convention I am asked a number of questions. Some of these questions are so good that they deserve more than a quick answer. This is how this article developed. Belva Griffiths had mentioned that she was in West Virginia at a rest area and saw a candle lamp that was similar to Westmoreland's Line #1972 lamp. At another convention a couple had a lamp with a base that looked different from the other Line #1972 bases. At the time, I attributed the lamp base to Smith Glass, but I didn't feel that attribution was correct.

As luck would have it I am now able to correct that assumption. As you can see in photo #1, the original Westmoreland #1972 base is on the left and a Brooke Glass base is on the right. Although the Brooke Glass version is a new mold, it is very similar to the Westmoreland base. The first difference is that there is an extra hump in the gentle slope of the base. The Westmoreland version does not have this hump it is just smooth.

On the inside of the lamp base, the Westmoreland version has one center ring. The Brooke example has 3 rings of varying diameters. So far the Brooke examples have only been made in crystal mist, but that could change in the future.

The shades are also only slightly different. The scallops are the same but the top of the Westmoreland shade has scallops and the Brooke example is round. Brooke has done some wonderful hand painted decorations on these mini lamps. The retail price on these is $25.95.

Brooke has also purchased the Westmoreland mold for the stained glass-styled shade. They have produced this in ruby carnival thus far. The quality of their ruby is more of an amberina. They have iridized this shade on the outside only and the iridizing is silvery in appearance. The quality of this shade should tell any collector that it is not an original Westmoreland example. These shades are paired with the crystal mist base. This candle lamp retails for $18.95.
