Summit Art Glass' Geraldine's Delight

By Lorraine Kovar

· Please note that this article first appeared in the Westmoreland Glass Society, Inc. newsletter.

This month's reproductions are really as red-orange as they appear in the photographs. Summit Art Glass of Ravenna, Ohio named this color Geraldine's Delight. This color was rumored to have been a special run for a customer, but Summit did produce quite a number of items in this color. Many of these pieces are from original Westmoreland molds. Please keep in mind that Westmoreland NEVER made this horrid color. The Paneled Grape large canister was found first in the Kansas/Missouri area, but can be readily found in most shops that carry new glass. The canister is marked with the "WG" mark inside the lid and on the underside of the foot. Although this strange color should not fool most collectors, Summit has also reproduced the large canister in milk glass as well. The quality of these new large canisters is very poor when compared to that of the original Westmoreland.

The duck salt dip has been extensively reproduced in a wide variety of colors. The poor coloration on these reproductions should help the collector differentiate the new from the old. On the duck in the photo, there are parts that are almost translucent, while other parts are very opaque and dark. The duck has a very small "WG" mark on its underside. The base of this duck is very thick, much thicker than the original.

The covered egg dish has a carnival finish. The inside of the base of the egg dish has a circular Westmoreland mark that is not found on original examples. Although the carnival on this piece is on the inside and outside of the piece, it is very uneven. The carnival finish on the top of the lid is a bit alligatored. The base of the egg is translucent, whereas the lid has swirl of opaque mixed with translucent swirls. It is definitely not a quality piece.
