Where Did They Come From?

Where Did They Come From?
There are two style sherbets available in amber Madrid. The footed cone shape sherbet that is very common and the much more difficult to find footed squatter and not as tall sherbet. There was a time in the collection history of DG that you couldn't go anywhere without seeing the common cone sherbet. All dealers had plenty of these in stock and you did not go out of your way looking for them.
One day about 15 years ago, while scanning a table of full of Depression Glass looking for the unusual or under priced or both, my eyes nearly popped out of my head. In front of me, as big as life was about the last thing that I expected, a ruffled Madrid Amber cone sherbet. Now clutching this exotic piece firmly in my hands, going through my head was, you don't exist. No book had ever listed one nor had I ever read of the existence of any. Understand I have purchased virtually every book ever written on the subject of Depression Era glass and read every article that I could get my hands on. In my opinion, books don't cost you money. They educate you and we all know the value of a good education. It was because of my thirst for knowledge that I recognized this piece as the gem that it is.
A couple of years later I purchased a second Madrid Amber ruffled sherbet. I paid considerably more for the second one than I had for the first. The first one was sold to a collector of Amber Madrid and to my knowledge still resides in that collection. The first collector that we worked was happy with one in their collection. The second one went to a very appreciative collector that told me the story behind these.
A glass worker one day made 8 of these and took them home. As the years went on these ruffled sherbets ended up, out for sale totally unappreciated. This collector missed them and they were scattered to the winds. He was so happy to finally catch up with one. To my knowledge this one is still in that collection.
I can not swear to you that this story is true but consider that this person had no reason to lie. I can verify the existence of two and I can tell you that in 20 years these are the only two that I have ever seen. I bought the first one in a glass show in CT and the other at a glass show in Texas. If memory serves correctly , they came out of West Virginia. You never know what will show up where.
Visit the MegaShow Bookstore and treat yourself to a book on a subject that you know nothing or little about. That is the first step to finding pieces like this. Oh, in case you don't think that there are still pieces like this out there, let me tell you that they are found consistently every year to date.
Enjoy your collection today,
