JENNYWARE KITCHEN ITEMS

By Lorraine Kovar

Jennyware is a line of kitchen items that was produced by Jeannette Glass Company of Jeannette, Pa. This line was produced in pink, crystal and Ultramarine, which will be featured here. Ultramarine is a blue-green color. The production standards of the day were not exact and therefore collectors will find that some pieces in the line are more green than blue. Collectors seem to be more enamored with the blue pieces. Collectors will buy a piece of the greenish tint only if it is a difficult piece to find and they don't have it yet! Other companies produced similarly colored items that can easily blend with the Jennyware line.

Photo #1 shows the round refrigerator set. There are three sizes in the set. The sizes are 16 ounce, 32 ounce and 70 ounce. All pieces were meant to have lids. These lids are difficult to pick up and most likely were the first pieces to break. The lids in this set make up about two-thirds of the value of the piece. These leftovers were designed to stack on top of one another. This made it convenient for the homemaker of the day.

Photo #2 shows a bath salts jar. This was produced for Richard Hudnut. Hudnut placed the bath salts in the container and sold the packaged deal. The metal cap is the hardest part to find. I have never found any other lid that will fit the opening on this jar. Collectors should only purchase this bath salt jar with the original lid. Finding one is near impossible!

Photo #3 shows a tab handle one-cup measure. There are four pieces to the set. Other sizes include ¼ cup, 1/3 cup and ½ cup. These are extremely hard to find in mint condition. Usually chips are found around the rim and on the tab handles. The ultramarine color is the most difficult to find but the pink and crystal isn't easy to find either. I have found complete sets in the original box at various shows but couldn't afford to purchase them.

Photo #4 is a Jennyware reamer. These seem to be available for collectors. Collectors must watch the handle, rim and juicer dome for chipping. Ultramarine is oddly enough the easiest color to find. I don't recall ever finding a crystal or pink version of this reamer. However, the ultramarine color does command the highest price due to collector demand.

Photo #5 shows a pair of footed Jennyware shakers. These shakers are available in salt, pepper, flour and sugar versions. Collectors like the original labels to be intact on these shakers. New labels for these shakers are available on the Megashow site. The lids on the shakers are an unusual size and lids are very difficult to find. Oddly enough some of the crystal shaker's lids do not fit the ultramarine shakers. Some of the crystal lids are larger than that of the ultramarine. A mold change must have taken place on the shakers.

In photo #6 two styles of the 4-1/2" by 4-1/2" square refrigerator dishes are shown. The one on the left has the usual Jennyware lid that will enable another dish of the same size to stack on top of it. The version on the right has ridges on the top of the lid and a scalloped edge on all four sides of the lid. The scalloped version seems more difficult to find. The edges of the lid are very prone to chipping. Both of these dishes are available in a 4-1/2" by 9" oblong version.

 Photo #7

Photo #7 shows two of the three mixing bowls. The mixing bowl on the left is 10-1/2" in diameter. The bowl on the right is 6" in diameter. Not shown is an 8-1/4" version. All of these bowls are fairly difficult to find. Most of the medium sized versions I have found seem to be very scratched around the inner sides. Perhaps this was the most used size. Crystal versions of the small bowl are very easy to find. Pink examples are nearly impossible to find. Other pieces can be found in Jennyware in Ultramarine, pink and crystal. Two styles of butter dishes, a pitcher and tumbler were produced but are very difficult to find in today's market.

Happy Collecting,

Lorraine Kovar
